Desperation, by Stephen King

From Publishers Weekly

If the publishing industry named a Person of the Year, this year's winner would be Stephen King. Not only is he writing the first modern novel to be serialized in book form (The Green Mile), but with the publication on Sept. 24 of The Regulators (Dutton; Forecasts, June 17) and Desperation, he becomes the first bestselling author?maybe the first author ever?to issue three new major novels in one calendar year. And there's more. With this astonishing work, King again proves himself the premier literary barometer of our cultural clime. For if The Regulators is a work of secular horror, this is a novel of sacred horror (King's first), and explicitly so. Like the second panel of a diptych, Desperation employs, with one major exception, the same characters as The Regulators, and the same source of horror: an evil force named Tak. (The novels aren't sequential, however; people who die in one can live, then die, in the other.) The exception is David Carver, 11, who, with a handful of other passers-through, including a major writer who's recently embraced sobriety, is trapped in the desert mining town of Desperation, Nev. There, Tak stalks them by possessing humans and turning them into homicidal maniacs, and by unleashing armies of coyotes, spiders and scorpions. The terror is relentless?this is King's scariest book since Misery?though the storytelling is looser than in The Regulators to allow room for spiritual themes. For united against Tak are not only David and his pals, but also God, who moves through the boy. King's God is the God of Job, implacable, beyond human ken. As the savageries inflicted upon David and others multiply, they must discern: What is God's will? And, how can God's will be done, when it seems so cruel? Near the story's end, the writer muses that horror "isn't the sort of stuff of which serious literature is made." King knows better, and so will anyone who reads this deeply moving and enthralling masterpiece of the genre. 1,750,000 first printing; BOMC main selection; simultaneous Penguin Audiobook. This is my second time reading this book, in all its phenomenal glory. My first read was when I was a teenager and had this unquenchable thirst for Stephen King. But this time around, several years later, I realized that I didnt quite understand WHAT I was reading. As an avid reader of things strange and macabre, Stephen King will always be my favorite writer. The elements therein are only able to be picked out by someone who can understand the fight between good and evil. It's not just the war between the two in our world, but it is the war within ourselves as well. Stephen doesnt have our Heavenly Father fully understood in this novel, but he is extremely close when it comes to certain scenes. I can appreciate some of his understanding, since I came to the Lord several years ago, and I am uncharacteristically in awe that a writer of horror can somewhat understand some of the Lord's nature in his novel. Reading it the second time, I can grasp the understanding and meaning of this historically and seemingly unending fight for our spirits, our souls. And as always, I can appreciate the talent he was given to paint these pictures so flawlessly when telling his tales.I didn't understand this book the first time but I was still entertained by it. Wasn't until the second time that I finally understood where Stephen was going and where he went.I highly recommend this novel to Stephen King fans, but mostly to those who can and will find the hidden meaning interlaced entirely throughout this novel. As always, Stephen, you are the best!! Kudos!!

I highly recommend getting The Regulators by Stephen King along with this book! They are sister books (The Regulators is written by King's pseudonym Richard Bachman) and they have the same basic characters but in a slightly different universe. Both are fast paced and classic Stephen King. Love them both and have read them multiple times

Extraordinary book with characters who touch your heart and become real in your mind. The ending is a surprise and unexpectedly heartwrenching. An awesome read and I recommend it to all King fans.

This story had a phenomenally gripping start that disappointingly fizzled in the middle and end. The tones of religiosity were a tad too maudlin for my tastes. God was an all too convenient mechanism that drove the plot forward and stripped the characters from any real, true actualization and growth. Recommend this book for any Christian conservatives looking for a good horror book. However, King managed to convey a real sense of despair, doom and horror in this tale nonetheless. I just wished it didn't have to rely so much on God as a device; that almost made it seem Deus ex machina. Literally.

I went to one of the Kindle forums and asked for some suggestions on some really scary books. Unfortunately "Desperation" was one of them. I won't describe the plot because other reviewers have already done that, but I definitely think this is one of King's scarier books, right up there with It and Pet Cemetery. Although the plot does remind me a little bit of Koontz's "Phantoms" where you have this evil, age-old, entity waiting beneath the earth to cause havoc and destruction on a small isolated town. But that's where the comparison ends, Mr. King has created and developed interesting and realistic characters that draw you into the book as much as the plot. It's the kind of book (and I hate to use cliches) that really keeps you on the edge of your seat and you find yourself trying to rush through the pages to find out what happens next.I'm not a HUGE Stephen King fan, I find myself more drawn to Dean Koontz's stories, but that's not to say I think King is any less. In fact, I'm sure he's written books that would even scare the pants off of Koontz! This one certainly might. And just like "Phantoms", this book left me feeling very nervous and jumpy for several days. So if you want something that will keep that nightlight on at night, read this book. But be warned there is a lot of graphic violence in this book, so if you are kind of squeamish about blood and guts, you might want to avoid this one.

I was an avid fan of Stephen King back-in-the-day. I hadn't read any of his work in a long while and was between books. I decided to read Desperation and it was like running into an old friend in many ways... great to find the familiarity again, the camaraderie from the past was comforting. However as the book went on, so too did the familiar aggravations; the (unnecessarily) long and drawn out dialogues and the excessive, over-the-top character development. More than that, I found I didn't quite understand or find believable, some of the words or actions of this cast of characters as it was portrayed, based on the rambling life-story description provided.Reading is a personal passion for many people, for many reasons, myself included. Sadly, this book became a determination in order to finish it. Perhaps a sci-fi fan (?) would enjoy this much more than I did.

I liked the story and the premise. There were many directions the story takes you down before the answer is revealed. The ending didn't fit well with the story and how it developed. Some of it could have been edited out to make a better story.

This book was one of the most amazing I have ever read by Stephen King!! It has some vulgar language and definitely some gore, but it is well worth it. This book is about good vs evil and trials and tribulations along the way. Once you start this book you will not want to stop. I read this book in 3 days!! This book also opens your eyes about what exactly fear is, but with the help of God, all things are possible!
