ANTON TREUER is professor of Ojibwe at Minnesota's Bemidji State University and editor of the only journal of the Ojibwe language. I am enjoying this book as I learn about the what has seemed to me overwhelming number of tribes of native Americans. The art work and illustrations and maps are wonderful. I do have a criticism for the author. When I look at the citations for the art work, I see the name of the Museum, but no artist is listed. [I am thinking pp. 22-23 from the Art Gallery of Ontario. If the artist is 'unknown', it would seem proper to specify this. Any artist wants acknowledgement of their work of art. I hope the author sees this review and can post a correction if there are future editions...or even send me a list! Thanks in advance!
I've been a huge fan of pretty much all the Nat. Geo Atlases. This one comes up short in my opinion. I simply don't care for the way it's set up. For instance, it's not necessarily chronological, it dissects tribes by regions. Furthermore, because of the time frame when the English had begun Colonizing North America....We miss out on whom the French, Spanish & Dutch had interactions with. I feel as if the East Coast, aside from the Cherokee & the Seminole, had been simply glazed over.
Beautiful book. The diagrams and pictures help bring the topics to life. The reading level is probably high school. I am using it as an additional resource in my grade 4 homeschool. For Native Americans, I also viewed 500 Nations and recommend it also. We will be keeping this obe to use through the years.

I got this book because it wrote about the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians which no one else seems to know exists, even though it is a Federally Recognized tribe. Lots of other info.
A really good and important publication. It is well organized, authentic, and informative. My only criticism is that the type size is very small on many of the pages, making it hard to read - especially some sections printed on a tinted background.
Put an excellent geographic reference to American Indian Tribes that I had heard of but didn't know of their range. Very, very informative!
This now has a permanent place on my coffee table until I get through it. An absolute gem filled with easy to read information.
