Oh, the purple prose! Oh, the mentions of how beautiful and sexy the killer is. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but really? Have you seen pictures of this woman? On and on and on.And it does read that the author has a crush on the killer. Which, if you read some other things he's written about her, is a good guess. He feels sorry for her. It was her childhood. Poor thing! No mention that as an adult one should take responsibility for one's actions.Overall one of the worst true crime books I have ever read. The story is interesting. The writing is terrible. And the bias unmistakable. I'd really like to read about this case from an objective point of view.
When you read reviews - then (try) to read the actual book - sometimes: you'd really wonder what book some of the OTHER reviewers had read!?!The kindest adjective I can think of to describe this story is: "messy".The telling of the story is repetitive and it's is all over the place - timelines are disregarded and the prose is awkward and difficult to follow.Actually - I have no idea how it all turned out because I could only bear to read less that a third of this unbelievable ("true") tale.
I hate giving negative book reviews, but in this case I feel I must. The story of “black widow,†Sharon Nelson, is potentially fascinating to psychology and true crime buffs. The question of how a woman, known to her community as promiscuous and amoral, ensnared two men into marrying her and got another man to kill them both is highly intriguing and should have made for a great read. Unfortunately, the author, gives us little insight into her victims and her co-conspirator beyond explaining that Nelson was pinup girl beautiful and sexy. And this description of her is repeated constantly thoughout the book, along with liberal use of the words “slut†and “whore.†This one-sentence paragraph stands out to me as an example of Olsen’s writing style, “Gary changed the subject, telling his brazen beauty that no matter what was done, it was too soon.†I found Mr. Olson’s heavy repetition of information he already provided to be annoying, and his frequent use of misogynistic name calling (in the context of narration, not from any specific person’s point of view) to be truly offensive and surprisingly unprofessional. Every time he repeated that she didn’t care what people thought of her (which was often) I could practically imagine him clutching his pearls in horror. His style of narration and his transitions from one scene to another is abrupt and difficult to follow. I became bored and disinterested long before I reached the “book 3†section of this book, and I had to force myself to continue reading.My takeaway from the book was Sharon Nelson was a home-wrecking, husband-stealing, sexpot hussy, who through her sexuality and good looks controlled both educated and/or world-smart men. Mr. Olsen makes it clear that she was a bully, she lied and stole without any guilt, she had an inflated sense of entitlement, none of which is a surprise, but I could not get much insight on how intelligent she was. Was she just a dumb bimbo, who got by on luck, and manipulation? I suspect the author thinks so, but he doesn’t give enough info for me to have an opinion.
The story itself was interesting however the quality control was terrible. For example, in chapter 14 it goes from one paragraph in which the killer asks his victim to pull over so he can take a leak to the very next paragraph the killer is sure his victim is dead to the very next paragraph the killer is home (in another town) running an errand with his wife! I am assuming this a quality control issue and not the author. Either way, a key part of the book (the murder) is missing.
I was interested in this book as I enjoy true crime and this one takes place in Colorado, my home state. But this is so poorly written that I could hardly wait for it to be over. The author jumps around so much that it was difficult to keep up. He also would begin talking about a new person with absolutely no introductory explanation as to where they fit in the story. I will never read another of this author's books, no matter how enticing it may sound.
Excellent. Just a fantastic book. I could not put it down. Sharon was truly an evil, mixed up woman. The book is written perfectly. I love Gregg Olsen and found nothing in the book I can critique. I've read reviews of people being aghast at how a woman could really be "all that great in bed" Well its obvious she was. And knew how to manipulate men in more ways than one, I am sure. This did not distract from the book in any way. It kept a very good pace for me. She got whatever she wanted. At whatever it cost. Read the book. You will not be disappointed.
Very disappointing!There’s not too much that I can say that others haven’t already said. Poorly written, hard to follow, grammar mistakes, name changes, author wrote like he was obsessed with Sharon Nelson, etc,. Author says throughout the book how beautiful, sexy and desirable that Sharon was but pictures showed the opposite. I read it on my kindle and a number of times when he mentioned how attractive she was I had look back at the cover photo to see if I was missing something. There were more photos at the end of the book and they too just showed an average looking woman.I’m a big fan of true crime stories but this was the worst that I have ever read. This was the first book of the author’s that I’ve read and will be my last. Thankfully I think it was either .99 cents or free when I got it.
